Winter in the California Wine Country

Winter is a period of little activity in the vineyards of the California wine country. Once fall winds have shaken the last of the foliage, the naked vines lie dormant in the California Wine Country’s cool winter months as heavy rains saturate the Sonoma and Napa soil and seep deep into the water table. Some California wine country vineyard managers plant cover crops between the vines such as mustard to replenish the soil and prevent erosion. Pruning, done by hand, takes place throughout the winter months. Winter can be a quiet time at most California wineries, making it ideal for more in-depth, intimate California wine tasting tours.
